These settings, for string trio, of two beloved Chinese melodies provide a showcase for the expressive, lyrical nature of traditional Chinese music. The second part can by played by a violin or viola. “Jasmine Flower” is set using traditional tertiary harmony, while the song for mothers, “Shi Shang Zhi You Ma Ma Hao,” has a distinctive Chinese harmony sound.
